SOMERVILLE PRIMARY SCHOOL OUTDOOR LEARNING SPACE: INCLUSIVE SCHOOLS FUND
Project type
EDCUCATIONAL - PLAY SPACE
Location
East Somerville, Victoria
This project involved the design and delivery of a new outdoor learning space for Somerville Primary School as part of the Inclusive Schools Fund program. Commissioned by the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA), the project sought to create an Indigenous-inspired sensory meeting place where students can learn, gather and feel comfortable within a natural outdoor setting.
The landscape concept is centered on inclusivity, wellbeing and connection to place. A series of sensory elements engage children through colour, texture, scent and seasonal change, supporting a range of learning styles and abilities. The space is designed to function as both a teaching environment and a place for informal gathering and reflection.
A new Covered Outdoor Learning Area provides flexible, all-weather use, enabling outdoor learning to occur throughout the year. The project complements the school’s existing facilities while strengthening the relationship between learning, play and landscape.
Design Core Architects were engaged for design, tender and contract administration services, with Paul Mikatoa acting as Principal Architect. The project was delivered in close collaboration with stakeholders to ensure alignment with educational and community objectives. The completed outdoor learning space provides a welcoming, inclusive and stimulating environment that supports learning beyond the classroom. The project enhances student wellbeing and engagement while celebrating culture, landscape and connection to place.
